The Dinner That Everyone Ate: A Simple Kid-Made Recipe Parents Love
Because we’ve had so much fun in our cooking class with a particular recipe, I just had to share! Our students in our afterschool programs here at Shoreline have absolutely loved the recipes we’ve been creating together. Even better, I’ve been hearing from so many parents about how much these recipes have made an impact at home, too!
This particular recipe focused on foundational kitchen skills, such as knife safety, proper cutting techniques, and building confidence while working with hot pans. These are big skills—especially for young children—but it has been incredible to watch their growth. Week by week, they’ve become more independent, more capable, and much more confident in the kitchen.
One of my favorite parts of teaching cooking in our after-school enrichment program is seeing those “full circle” moments. At the beginning of the school year, there were several students who didn’t even want to touch a spatula. Fast forward to now, and those same kids are confidently flipping their food on the griddle and managing a hot pan like little pros. The pride on their faces says it all.
And the impact doesn’t stop in the classroom—it carries right into family life.
So, what was the standout recipe that sparked all this excitement? Our Tortilla Pizza Pockets!
I’ve had multiple families tell me this simple recipe has officially made it into their weekly dinner rotation. One student proudly shared that they’ve made them several times at home since our class. Another parent told me that her daughter was so inspired that she asked to go to the store that very weekend, picked out her own ingredients, and made dinner for the entire family—all by herself! She cooked for Mom, Dad, herself, and all three of her sisters.
And then her mom said something that really stuck with me:
“But that’s not even the amazing part… the amazing part is that EVERYONE ate them!”
If you’re a parent, you know just how rare and magical that is.
As someone with my own 6- and 2-year-old, I can absolutely relate. Finding a meal that everyone enjoys can feel like striking gold. That’s when it really clicked for me—these tortilla pizza pockets are kind of the perfect storm of kid-friendly cooking:
• They’re simple and not overly complicated
• They’re completely customizable (perfect for picky eaters!)
• They’re hands-on and interactive
• The ingredients are easy to find and budget-friendly
• And most importantly… they’re delicious
Cooking experiences like this provide so much more than just a snack. They build life skills, encourage creativity, and create meaningful opportunities for kids to contribute at home.
If you’re looking for a fun, confidence-building activity to try with your kids, I highly recommend giving these a shot. Let your child take the lead where they can—whether it’s choosing toppings, assembling their pizza pocket, or helping cook. That sense of ownership makes all the difference.
I’ve included the recipe and instructions below so you can try it at home. And if you want to see how we do it in class, check out our cooking video as well.
Also, registration is now open at Shoreline Learning Center for our summer camp and school-age program!
